Mariners Line Up Blades Swoop
EXCLUSIVE: Mariners supremo Lyall Gorman has hinted a Sheffield United player is on the way to Bluetongue Stadium.

Gorman hinted Central Coast's link with Sheffield United would see a Blades player at Bluetongue sooner rather than later.

"We'd probably look at signing a player [Sheffield] rather than a loan deal. We're just looking at it at the moment to see what suits and fits us," he said.

The Bluetongue empressario described the alliance with the English championship club as "fantastic".

"Alex Tobin [club development officer] will be off to Sao Paulo, Brazil, next week to visit a club that's linked with Sheffield's worldwide network. He'll look at their youth development and hopefully bring back some good ideas for our youth network."

Gorman added that the Mariners would begin the season – which kicks off in mid August – with 22 players rather than the full 23 allowable under A-League rules.

"We'll give a youth league player the opportunity to get a spot in our senior squad," he said.

Gorman also repeated his categoric denial of any contact between Central Coast and fallen Socceroo idol Mark Bosnich.

Bosnich has been touted as a stand-in replacement for the banned Danny Vukovic, but Gorman insists no-one at the club had been in touch with Bosnich.

But he added: "We're always willing to talk with quality players."

god i would love to see bosnich play espically in the a-league. im sure you remember him dejusus. he was a beast at man u. still younger the schwazer so could still push for a national call up lol.

Roar go Dutch with Van Dijk

Queensland Roar has secured the services of Dutch striker Sergio van Dijk on a two-year deal.

The 25-year-old striker has impressed in training matches for the Roar since arriving in Brisbane at the end of May.

The former FC Emmen and FC Groningen striker has scored 52 times in 194 senior appearances in the two top divisions in the Netherlands.

Van Dijk said he was delighted to have signed the deal with the Roar having been highly impressed by the professional set-up at the club.

“I’m very happy to sign here,” van Dijk said. “I played for a second division club (in the Netherlands) and it is not as professional as here… they are all positive things here in Australia."

“I want to score goals, that’s the thing I have to do. But I also want to help the team to play better football."

The striker said he was also excited to play under the vastly experienced coaching staff headed by Frank Farina.

The Roar will be in action again on Tuesday night against Peninsula Power.
