Rojiblancos Ready To Pounce For Assuncao
Atletico Madrid are moving ever closer to signing Paulo Assuncao on a free transfer according to reports in Spain.
The former Porto midfielder terminated his contract with the Do Dragao based club on Thursday after using the Webster rule which, according to FIFA regulations, means any player under 28 years of age can break his contract with his current club if they have been there for three or more years.
This is exactly what Assuncao did and reports in Spain claim he will be signing for Atletico Madrid.
His former Porto team mate Lucho Gonzalez was sad to see him leave and he claims that Assuncao was one of the best players in the Portuguese Bwin Liga.
“He was one of the best players in Portugal,” said Gonzalez.
“He is a really important player and for me he was key to this side, a sort of unsung hero if you like.”
According to El Mundo Deportivo, there is a great chance that the Brazilian-born midfield maestro will sign for the Rojiblancos.
Assuncao broke his contract because Porto did not want to meet his wage demands when they tried to extend his deal.
Porto fans even went along to the club’s training ground to beg the player to sign a new deal, but instead he shocked the club and walked out.
Whatever happens, one thing is for sure and that is Atleti will pounce for the player as soon as they get a chance.
This guy is a big loss for Porto, in a way Porto are a lil happy with his departure, even more so if he joins Atletico because that will put an end to specualtion about Lucho moving to Atletico.
Next year Atletico should be serious contenders for the top 2 next season.
