Jo and Ronaldinho expected at Eastlands

Manchester City are the verge of signing Brazilian striker Jo, while Ronaldinho may not be far behind after both moves were approved by new manager Mark Hughes.

City owner Thaksin Shinawatra had put all summer transfers on hold while he conducted a search for a successor to Sven Goran Eriksson.

But now Hughes has been secured and the Welshman has given a move for long-term target Jo the all-clear, Thaksin is expected to complete his swoop for the CSKA Moscow forward.

City's recently appointed executive chairman Garry Cook has confirmed that Jo is now expected to arrive at Eastlands.

Secret

"We have had a conversation with Mark Hughes about this because we wanted to see what he felt," said Cook. "But it would be fair to say we expect to see Jo at Manchester City."

Meanwhile, Cook has reiterated City's desire to land two-time Fifa World Player of the Year Ronaldinho, who Hughes would also be eager to call upon next season.

Ronaldinho is set to leave Barcelona this summer after falling out of favour at Camp Nou and Shinawatra has made no secret of his admiration of the Brazilian playmaker.

But Cook insists City are equally keen to avoid any attempt to sign the 28-year-old turning into a publicity stunt.

Competitive

"We want to bring the best players to our football club," Cook added on Sky Sports News. "It is well documented that we are well down that path, but we also know it is a very competitive landscape.

"We sat down with Mark and said, 'here are some targets, what do you think?' and he has been very clear in his thoughts and Ronaldinho is one of those.

"But we don't want this to become a marketing exercise. Mark has to make the decision about whether he is in the football team.

"We are not taking him at the expense of being a great football club."

I don't know about Ronaldinho but Jo could become a great player at City. Ronaldinho is clearly just after the money but hey! It'll be cool to him in the prem.

Ronnie move imminent?

Jo and Ronaldinho to City Ronaldinho1

The Ronaldinho-to-City story gathers more momentum, and the new manager is set to instil more discipline according to this week's Sundays.

Sunday Mirror

"Ronaldinho expected to sign for Manchester City in next 48 hours"

Ronaldinho is expected to sign for Manchester City in the next 48 hours in a deal that will make him the world's highest-paid player.

City were granted permission by Barcelona yesterday to open talks with the Brazilian star as representatives of Blues chairman Thaksin Shinawatra touched down in Ronaldinho's hometown of Porto Alegre to table an offer to the 28-year-old.

City have not yet agreed a fee with Barca, but that will not be a problem given they are set to meet his £200,000-a-week wage demand.

City hope that a deal can be sealed over the weekend - and that Ronaldinho will then fly to Manchester to be unveiled to his new public.

He will be the sensational start to a spree City's Thai owner has vowed to fund for new boss Mark Hughes.

Mail on Sunday

"Hughes told to get tough on Eriksson's City slackers"

New Manchester City manager Mark Hughes will clamp down on discipline after complaints that Sven Goran Eriksson was too lax.

Hughes, who has to get his players ready for the start of the UEFA Cup in July, will discover that several players were unhappy his predecessor allowed senior foreign players to get away with poor punctuality and ignored dress code.

A source close to the club said: 'Everyone liked Sven but some players ignored the rules and got away with it. The players would be told what to wear for games or at the training ground but some of the players wouldn't follow it.

'Nothing was done, though - Sven was a bit soft and there was a bit of unhappiness about it behind the scenes.'

Former Blackburn boss Hughes wants Rovers' Peru striker Roque Santa Cruz but will have to take on Arsenal and Manchester United for his signature. But he is unlikely to challenge Liverpool in a £10 million bidding war for England midfielder David Bentley.

I'm sure he will be getting paid a s**t load of money for this deal. Disgusting, imo.

On the other hand it will be cool to see him play in the EPL.

Eastlands club granted permission by Barca; Jo signing imminent

Manchester City have been granted permission to open talks with Barcelona forward Ronaldinho.

City have made no secret of their desire to purchase the two-time Fifa World Player of the Year, with owner Thaksin Shinawatra keen to bring a big-name signing to Eastlands.

And executive chairman Garry Cook has revealed that the club is set to discuss terms with the player as recently appointed manager Mark Hughes looks to build his squad for next season.

"It's a tenuous stage and I don't want to give too much away, but Barcelona gave us clearance to talk to him," Cook told Radio Five Live.

World's greatest

"We had some people in Brazil last weekend, who we've been talking to but we have a long, long list of things we need to get done because of the type of player he is - the world's greatest player.

"We're nowhere near completion but the most important thing is that he wants to get back and play football. He wants to show the world he is the greatest player. At the moment, though, we're just ticking off the boxes.

"He has intimated he is interested, otherwise we wouldn't be at the stage we are now. Ronaldinho has an interest in coming to City

"I think the Manchester City fans, who are the most important part of this, would like to see Ronaldinho kicking off next season here."

Jo capture

Cook also confirmed that City are on the brink of completing the capture of CSKA Moscow striker Jo.

"We're almost there (with Jo). It might be in the next seven days, sooner if possible," Cook continued.

"What's great to me is that a year ago we were looking at a very different player profile, so we are very excited by it.

"We want to set targets for ourselves individually, play better and get better. Mark does too and wants to work with that type of player."

Gunna be soo weird seeing him at City. One thing the scum get ol' Mark Hughes but Ronaldinho aswell. Shocking!

Jo is a great player!

When he played for CSKA against Arsenal in the champions league he was always causing our defense problems and i think he actually scored in the away leg.. not certain on that but i know he played well in both legs, we was also heavily linked with him last year!

That's Vagner Love. Jo is the tall lad with a sort of afro. Was linked with Benfica like 2 years ago just before he left Corinthians for CSKA.

Gael Kakuta signs Chelsea contract extension

Kakuta is yet to establish himself as a Chelsea regular
Chelsea forward Gael Kakuta has signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract to keep him at the club until 2015.
The 19-year-old joined the club in July 2007 but had to wait until November 2009 to make his first-team debut.
However he has been a regular squad member this season with manager Carlo Ancelotti forced to contend with injuries to senior players.
"I have to make a way for myself into the starting 11 and make my dream come true," Kakuta told Chelsea's website.
"Since I signed for Chelsea when I was 16 all I was thinking about was to get to the first team.
"It's my job to do my best and try to play more often and show the coach that I am good enough to play in the team."
Kakuta helped his country win the European Under 19 Championship this summer and was also voted Uefa's Golden Player for the tournament.

He is still young but now's the time for him to show everyone his true potential

His arrival from Lens was controversial with Chelsea found guilty in 2009 of having induced the player to break his contract.
Initially the Blues were barred from making signings until September 2011, although the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the ban earlier in 2010 - however Chelsea were required to pay £113,000 compensation to cover the player's development at the French club.
Kakuta has played in five out of six Champions League group games, starting in two, including the home game against group runners-up Marseille.
"It is a dream when you are young to play in the Champions League and I hope I will play more games," he added.
"It is always good to play with players with more experience, you learn quicker and to improve quicker is good for our development."
